…as Tenure. Teachers would be hired and fired based on their ability to engage children, and on their talent and enthusiasm for teaching. No one would be allowed to rest on their laurels–if they did, they’d be shown the door.
To encourage present teachers to become more creative and to draw more talent to enter the teaching profession, teaching salaries would start at $75,000 a year.
After all, can you think of a profession with longer term consequences?
I definitely think teachers should have higher salaries, especially the motivated creative teachers. There should be some way to reward them and another way to weed out all the duds, too.
Amen! I have a few friends that are teachers and the tenure debate sure is a hot one! There is no other profession (that I know of) on this planet where you can not get fired – except for (tenured)teaching.
Pay these teachers well and don’t let them ride out a 30 year career unless they are holding up their end of the bargain.
I was a teacher for a lot of years and I SO agree with you. Around here it costs the school system over $50,000 just to get rid of an incompetent tenured teacher. Needless to say it isn’t done very often, to the detriment of good education.
“Word Up!” as the kids say. Think of the hours per day that our children are under the influence of the teachers. I think teachers should make as much as CEOs any day of the week!
I wish you were king. I would second this motion, or do whatever it is you do in kingdoms to put something like this into place.
