In this country alone, between 3 and 4 million unwanted pets are euthanized every year. But there is one place where mans best friend always has hope: Dogtown. One of the largest no-kill animal facilities in the country, Dogtown is located on 33,000 acres of Southern Utah canyon country. The sanctuary run by the Best Friends Animal Society hosts hundreds of dogs from all around the country, along with cats, horses, rabbits, goats and various other farm animals about 1,500 animals at any one time.
For the lost canine souls that find shelter at this home in one of 12 lodging facilities, a staff of over 60 oversees their every need including medical attention, training and rehabilitation with the eventual hope of finding these dogs a new, loving home. Dogtown is often the last hope for dogs requiring specialized or urgent medical attention or for abused and neglected animals. It looks good, but I have a very limited tolerance for sad stories about dogs. A few minutes into the show, I will probably start in yelling, “human’s suck!”

Prof.J. I am a total wimp when it comes to watching sad stories. I don’t even want to hear someone tell me about them. And, while it’s all too true that “some” humans do suck, I find it uplifting to know that “some” humans are able to do really amazing work to try to make a difference.
I think NGC was moved to premium service in our area.
I have had to rethink my take on at least the local Humane Society maybe they are just a reflection of the whole entity. It came out a couple of years ago how many animals they euthanize who are otherwise healthy. They rationalized this with their slogan “No unwanted pets.”

It doesn’t look like we’ll get it up here. Like others, I might have a hard time watching it even though a safe haven for dogs sounds like a wonderful idea. I’m such a wuss.

I LOVE Dog Town and everything about Best Friends! We visited there this past fall and this place is like animal heaven. I envy the people who work there.
Just caught an episode for the first time. While I too, hate sad animal stories, this program is not like that at all. It shows that there is huge hope for some of the saddes most neglected animals out there. It’s amazing to watch the vets and trainers work with each dog and to see how well they respond to a little TLC. Kudos to NGC for putting a program out there and showing that there is hope for all animals.
By the way, I read that Dogtown is currently documenting 22 of the pitbulls rescued from Michael Vick’s dogfighting ring. Should air this summer.
